Manado, also known as Menado, is the provincial capital and administrative centre at the northern tip of Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island and a great place to begin an exploration of the region. A strong European presence was established in Manado in the 17th century, when it was known as Wenang, but the area has been inhabited for much longer by the native Minahasa people. The word Minahasa is derived from variations on the Indonesian words for ‘to become’ (mina) and ‘one’ (esa).

The Tarsius Spectrum is a tiny monkey found only at the Tangkoko Nature Reserve near Bitung, a few hours from Manado. Now very rare, it has a government committee working to protect it from extinction. Best seen around sunset, the Tarsius are known for their loyalty to one another.

Set in lush green surroundings, Manado is full of busy markets, shops, restaurants, hotels and places of worship. Manado is also very well known for its picturesque bay, site of some spectacular diving locations, especially around Palau Bunaken, a nearby group of tropical islands. Snorkelling is also a very popular pastime, as is lazing in the sun and gawking at other island sights, like Manado Tua, the almost perfectly shaped volcanic cone that rises spectacularly from the sea.

Water sports are just one reason for travel in Manado. Discovering more about the people (see video) and the place should be high on any visitor’s list. Travel inland passes through the homes of the various Minahasa ethnic groups. You will also catch glimpses of unique wildlife – such as the Tarsius Spectrum (see photo above) – taking advantage of many lakes, forest-covered mountains and hidden volcanoes.
