Accommodation in Cape Town

Cape Town, or the Mother City as it is affectionately known, has become famous for its vibrant nightlife, spectacular scenery and its idyllic vineyards. Table mountain for instance, has always been a worthy crowd puller, but recently, new and exciting aspects of Cape Town and the Cape culture have risen into the lime light.

Township tourism may sound like a strange term, to some even an oxymoron, but it is a unique phenomenon that has swept South Africa. Tourists are flocking away from traditional hotspots like the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and instead venturing into the once taboo townships where they experience the sights and sounds of the ‘real' Cape Town.

At local bars or ‘shebeens' tourists can sample traditional beer (mngcmboti) which is often brewed onsite and rarely sold commercially. Market places also prove to be very interesting, tourists can expect to see everything from beaded dolls, paintings and cellphones to local fast food, chickens and dried tripe. To accommodate the flux in tourists, local bed and breakfasts and Cape Town hotels have emerged. Perhaps the most famous is Vicky's Bed and Breakfast which is located in the heart of the informal settlement. Some other popular (and highly recommended) options are Liziwe's, Kopanong and Malebo's B&B. These guest houses in Cape Town are typically spotlessly clean and the hosts are extremely welcoming.

For those who prefer to stay in the city or surrounding suburbs, there are Cape accommodation options to suit everyone. Budget travellers might consider some of the popular backpackers in the city; The Backpack is an excellent choice. Trendy boutiques are sparking a lot of interest; Daddy Long Legs is a much beloved art hotel in Cape Town that is constantly evolving into something new and exciting. Camps Bay is one of the most popular destinations for those looking for top end luxury. It's white sandy beaches are lined with extravagant Cape hotels that more than live up to their reputation. The Bay Hotel is a hands down favourite.
