One of the very beautiful places of the Mekong Delta, Chau Doc is as close as you can get to Cambodia without being in it. The Bassac River flows through the town and is a border crossing for river borne traffic, and the small Sam Mountain has an excellent view of the flat plain on the other side. Chau Doc is situated 250 km west of Ho Chi Minh City. It takes about six hours to travel by bus from Hồ Chí Minh City to Chau Doc. Travellers can also visit the site where 3,000 civilians were massacred by the Khmer Rouge in 1978. Chau Doc is at the leaping off point of the waterway between Vietnam and Cambodia. Each year, many tourists pass through Long Xuyen on their way to Chau Doc, which is a major stop-over on the way to Cambodia. Long Xuyen (Long Xuyên) is the capital city of An Giang Province, in the Mekong Delta region of southwestern Vietnam. It's the second most prosperous town in southwestern Vietnam, just after Can Tho city. Travelling to Long Xuyen can be best done by bus, which takes about 5 hours from Ho Chi Minh City or 1.5 hours from Can Tho. There are several places for tourists looking for Long Xuyen tours such as the floating market, or Tiger island where the former president Ton Duc Thang was born.
Tourists rarely stay in Long Xuyen but there are several hotels in Long Xuyen with comfortable rooms.
