Kvarner derives its name from Latin word Quaternarius, as Romans used to call Kvaerner, "four heavenly directions" .  Actually, they were right,  because at this point of Europe, where the Adriatic Sea cuts deep into Continental Europe, four sides of the world meet, metaphorically speaking, but given its historical background and culture this region was always considered as the place where the East meets the West, or where Europe meets the Balkans.
