The diversity of Malawi captures your heart. If you are a first time visitor to Africa or if you have travelled throughout the continent, Malawi promises to astound you with it’s stunning landscapes, beautiful lakeshore and wonderfully friendly people. Holidays in Malawi can be filled with adventure, enriched by community visits, relaxing retreats on the shores of Lake Malawi with days spent inside stunning National Parks offering some of the best hidden wilderness areas offered in Africa. Undisturbed game viewing, hikes to mountain plateaus, tasting tea amongst the tea fields, swapping stories with local villagers, waking to the waves of Lake Malawi, Malawi is a destination just waiting to be explored! Here are some of our highlights.
Ntchisi Forest Lodge The perfect start to Malawi!
Within two hours of landing in Malawi you can be deep in the wilds of rural Malawi at the stunning Ntchisi Forest Lodge. Tarmac roads end and a dirt track leads you through hilltop communities marked by traditionally built mud houses with children running out to wave as you go past. Ntchisi Forest Lodge has all the ingredients for a boutique lodge with all the character of a homely hillside retreat. Owner run the lodge offers visitors a base to explore the nearby rainforest, volunteer within the local communities or rest and relax in this stunning location. With some of the best home-cooked food in Malawi Ntchisi Forest Lodge is the perfect place to spend the first few days of your Malawi experience. Highlights for us are watching the sunset over the hills, having a local Malawian cookery lesson and spending mornings walking through the villages captivated by the stunning views and incredibly welcoming people.
Mumbo Island An eco-getaway on Lake Malawi!
At the end of the jetty the boat is waiting to take you across to the island eco-retreat known as Mumbo. Once on board we kick off our shoes and head onto the roof of the small boat to ride in style across the bay towards Mumbo Island. A small rocky outcrop is the first sign of Mumbo and it is not until you have almost reached the small sandy bay that you see the thatched roofs of the lodge. Hammocks sway in the breeze high above the water marking each stilted bedroom made completely from local materials and blending in beautifully with the surrounding environment. The rooms are situated on their own island that is reached by a bridge from the main lodge area. With only 8 rooms the island can easily feel like your own private retreat and the staff are incredibly discreet appearing at exactly the right time for a top up or to help with getting your kayak in the water. Some of our favourite Mumbo moments are kayaking around the island, snorkelling with the cyclid fish, sunset boat trips, waking in the morning to a tea and coffee delivery, afternoon siestas on the hammocks, walking to Pod Rock for an evening Gin and Tonic.
Lujeri Tea Estate Location, Location, Location!
Hire this private villa in the heart of Malawi’s tea growing region and stay within this working tea estate. The stunning backdrop of Mount Mulanje offers a wonderful contrast to the green fields of the tea estates. The mountain rivers run through the estates offering natural waterfalls and streams naturally irrigating this fertile land. Lujeri Tea Estate is arguably the most beautiful of all the estates in Malawi and the guest-house offers the best way to appreciate this location. With colonial architecture and big ensuite rooms the house sleeps ten and is the perfect place to escape to for a weekend with friends. Hired on a self-catering basis the staff are fantastic at preparing a braii, cooking delicious meals and making you feel you have the place to yourselves. The swimming pool is magical; it is best to laze by the pool staring at the magnificent mountain backdrop- a view that is hard to beat! Our favourite Lujeri moments are walking through the tea fields, sundowners round the pool, swimming in the nearby waterfall pools, long evenings with friends followed by refreshing morning swims!
