Miri is a charming city in the northern part of Sarawak, on the beautiful island of Borneo.  The population of Miri is approximately 300,000 people, making it the second largest city in Sarawak after Kuching. Miri gained its status as a city on 20th May 2005. Miri is also the birthplace of Malaysia's petroleum industry, which remains the major industry of the city up until today.  The first oil well was drilled by Shell in 1910 atop Canada Hill, named the Grand Old Lady and is now a state monument and one of the many tourist attractions of the city.  Because of the oil discovery, Miri has flourished astoundingly throughout the years since the 1900s into a booming business, commercial and educational hub.

The Niah National Park is one of the main archaeological and historical sites marking the oldest human remains in South East Asia.  The Lambir Hills National Park is filled with abundant flora and fauna with a park rank at number 12 of the Mega Biodiverse Sites in the World. The Loagan Bunut National Park is enclosed by Sarawak's largest natural lake and is perfect for those who enjoy bird watching.

The Miri Reef is also a recent diving location discovery boasting the most beautiful coral reefs and marine life in Sarawak.  Along with that, Miri also has some of the most stunning beaches since it is close to the sea. This includes Miri beaches such as Hawaii Beach, Luak Esplanade, TanjungLobang Beach, Marina Park, Lutong Beach and Bekenu-Sibuti Beach.

The heritage and culture of Miri is fascinating with a multi-racial community living peacefully together. The main ethnic tribes include the Chinese and bumiputera, which also mean "Princes of the Land", consisting of the Malay, OrangUlu and Dayak. The largest Taoist temple in South East Asia is also located in Miri, called the Lotus Hill Taoist Temple.

There are scores of shopping and restaurants in Miri, such as the newly renovated Bintang Megamall, Boulevard Shopping Complex, Imperial Mall and numerous small boutiques and shop lots around the area. Miri is famous for its handicrafts, particularly for the local beads, and many Miri handicrafts shops along Jalan Bendahara and Brooke Road are the main handicraft shopping locations for both the tourists and the locals.

An array of recreational activities can also be enjoyed in Miri such as jet-skiing, go-karting, parasailing, ATV biking, yachting, kayaking and so much more.
