Wide open spaces and breath-taking scenery are what make the south of Namibia so special. It encompasses two deserts, the Kalahari and the Namib, as well as one of the largest canyons in the world. Towering sand dunes of rich, ever-changing hues; rugged mountains; immense open savannahs of golden grass; dusty gravel plains; ancient, eroded river courses and a coastline of crashing waves and bleached bones - this is what makes up the essence of the South.

The towns of southern Namibia do not really hold much interest for the average tourist, with the exception of Luderitz, but there are many good accommodation options in the more remote areas, ranging from very basic camp sites to some of the best luxury lodges Namibia has to offer. You can spend as little as US$10pp or as much as US$1000pp, with a good range in between. Typically though, accommodation in the south of Namibia is rustic, in keeping with the natural surroundings. Electricity is frequently only provided by solar panels or generators due to most places being too far from the national grid system.

If your main interest is hiking then the winter months are much cooler and therefore more suitable for visitors. Days tend to be clear, dry and in the mid 20s. However for night-time you'll need to pack some winter woollies as temperatures can drop below zero, particularly in the desert areas. Summer months can be extremely hot during the day but this is why most activities centre around sunrise and sunset, making it a more comfortable experience and taking advantage of the rich, golden light at these times. Also, with summer comes the possibility of rain and some of the most amazing thunder storms you are ever likely to witness. Namibians love rain as it is the key to everything's existence in such an arid and inhospitable environment, changing the landscape nearly overnight from parched and dusty to a stunning vista of grass and flowers. If travelling in the summer months and booking a self-drive tour it is best to have a 4x4 vehicle and air-conditioning, not only to keep you cool but also to keep the dust, from all the gravel roads, from coming in.

The best way to see southern Namibia is either by renting a vehicle or booking a South Namibia tour, whether scheduled or on a private basis. We have a selection of trips on our web site or we are more than happy to help you arrange a self-drive tour that is specific to your interests, time frame and budget.
