Victoria Falls Hotels
Victoria Falls is the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. The Zambezi River, the fourth largest river in Africa travels peacefully on the upper Zambezi, some 2 km's wide, before being transformed into a crashing raging torrent as it plummets 100 m over the basalt rock face, sending 500,000 cubic litres of water per minute into the narrow gorge below; forming the magnificent and majestic Victoria Falls. Staying in a Victoria Falls hotels is a great way to experience the brilliance of the falls up close, offering incredible views and sounds right out your window!
Below the Falls, the Zambezi River continues its journey racing through the gorge cutting through the steep sides, forming arguably the most dramatic and invigorating rapids in the world, as it winds and carves a dramatic zigzag formation for a further 8 kms, continuing thereafter to the dammed Gwembe Valley, Lake Kariba.
David Livingstone first revealed this natural wonder to the world in 1855 when he was brought here by the Karanga people, he chose to name them after Queen Victoria but as one witnesses the plumes of spray formed from the plummeting Zambezi transcending sometimes as high as 2 km into the skies above, the Karanga name Mosi-oa-Tunya, literally "the smoke that thunders" describes it far more aptly.
