Windhoek and Central Namibia Hotels

Windhoek is the capital of Namibia and the starting point for nearly all tourists travelling to this remarkable country. It is a well organised, clean and prosperous city that has a quiet African vibe whilst still retaining some of its German colonial history. The city centre is small and easy to explore on foot with a good selection of shops, restaurants and street vendors selling curios, as well as a few museums, historic buildings and some good value Windhoek hotels. On the outskirts of town you will find the old township areas of Khomasdal and Katutura where there are several interesting markets such as the local food stalls in the Single Quarters selling kapana - slices of meat and fat cooked over an open fire.
Windhoek has a good selection of accommodation from backpackers to upmarket Windhoek hotels. Budget travellers should expect to pay around US$15-30pp, mid-range accommodation between US$50-80pp and upmarket accommodation US$100-240pp.
However, the main attraction of Namibia is not its towns but rather the dramatic scenery and wide open spaces of the bush. Shrug off the hustle and bustle of urban living and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Kalahari desert; the rugged beauty of the Erongo region or the splendour of the Waterberg Plateau. There are also several lodges outside of Windhoek that offer excellent game viewing. One of our favourite spots to relax and enjoy nature is at Erongo Wilderness Lodge where the balance between exploration, leisure and indulgence has been perfected.
Although the peak season to visit Namibia is between July to September, due to the lack of rain and cooler winter temperatures, it is worth considering other options depending on your interests. During the rainy season there are far fewer tourists around and although it is hot and generally better to have a 4x4 vehicle, for those with a more adventurous heart and a desire to not be part of a crowd, this is a great time to visit. Having said this, most locals think April and May are the best months of the year - temperatures dropping to a comfortable level, the rainy season tailing off, the country looking more lush but with the grass turning gold as the rains disappear. For those who are more interested in game viewing but want to avoid the peak season then June is a good option. However it is worth remembering that nights can get very cold during winter (May-August).
Whatever your interests are, we look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful country and hope to ensure you have a memorable trip!
